What Florida Spiders Are Looking For In Jacksonville
We have quite a variety of spiders in our Jacksonville service area and these Florida spiders are looking for three things: Food, harborage, and moisture. Of the three, food is the top priority because spiders can derive moisture from the food they eat. Your top priority needs to be food management. What do spiders eat? Bugs – a whole lot of them!
How To Control Spiders Food Sources
You have a lot of things that crawl around in your Jacksonville yard. Some have six legs. Some have eight legs. Some have a lot more than eight legs. All of these bugs are food for spiders. Here are a few natural ways you can deter bug activity.
Sanitation
The bugs that are attracted to decaying organic matter and feces can be deterred with good sanitation.
- Store your trash in covered containers.
- Deodorize your trash cans if your containers acquire an odor.
- Keep on top of pet waste clean-up.
Light
Many bugs are attracted to light – in particular, white light. If you have exterior white lights, you’ll lure insects to your home and invite them to take up residence.
- Keep lights off in areas where it is not a security concern.
- Keep drapes and shades closed at night.
- Replace white lights with yellow lights. Insects aren’t able to detect yellow light.
Moisture
Many bugs are attracted to moist habitats. If you have a damp perimeter, these bugs will be able to establish themselves and develop a population.
- Clean your gutters and make necessary repairs to your gutter system.
- Trim your landscaping to allow air to easily flow through your vegetation to keep things dry.
- Remove weeds, grass, and other unnecessary vegetation in your landscaping beds.
Wood
We have bugs in Jacksonville that feed on wood, tunnel through wood, or just live in wood sources.
- Move scrap wood from construction projects to at least 20 feet from your home. If necessary, create a structure to place scrap wood on. This gets the wood up off the ground and makes it less attractive to pests.
- Pick up branches. If possible, burn them immediately. If you don’t burn your branches, remove them from your yard or create a structure to elevate them.
When you remove attractants, venomous spiders – and really big spiders, like wolf spiders – will be significantly deterred.
Spider Exclusion
Once you’ve taken steps to make your exterior less interesting to spiders, it is time to consider how to deter them from getting in. Spiders don’t chew holes in order to get inside your home. They access gaps, cracks, and holes that already exist.
- Replace weatherstripping, door sweeps, and wood frames around exterior doors that don’t have a good seal.
- Fill in holes created by wood rot or pest damage.
- Seal gaps above sill plates and around utilities.
- Make sure all of your window and door screens are in good working condition and that there are no gaps around the frames of your screens.
This added prevention step will give you even more protection from venomous spiders and really big spiders.
Interior Pest Control
When a spider roams into your yard and finds an entry point that you missed, it will check out the interior of your home. If it doesn’t find any food sources in your home, what do you think it will do? That’s right. It will move on to better hunting grounds. Many Jacksonville residents kill spiders in the house but neglect to address the reasons spiders get in.
Here are some tips for managing pests in your home:
- Keep things as clean as possible; this includes deep cleaning.
- Keep your trash covered and remove it before any odors develop.
- Keep food covered.
- Put dishes in soapy water.
- Address humidity by installing ventilation or dehumidifiers.
- Fix leaky faucets and other plumbing issues.
Should you kill spiders in the house? We will leave that for you to decide, but our recommendation is to remove spider webs and destroy any egg sacs you find. That will prevent spiders from growing their population.
